My name’s Robert Griggs, and I’m a freshman here at University Park, class of 2020. I’m double majoring in Business Management and Global & International Studies with a minor in French. My dad was in the military all my life, so I don’t really have a hometown; instead, I’ve had the opportunity to live in Georgia, Missouri, North Carolina, New York, Rhode Island, Louisiana, and Pennsylvania. I came to Penn State for the football games and for the abundance of opportunities to become involved in an amazing community. I was a Freshmen Representative in UPUA during the 11th Assembly, and I fell in love with the organization. I hope to be able to continue my work as an At-Large Representative in the 12th Assembly!
- Student poverty– Much of my work during the 11th Assembly for the Governmental Affairs Committee was in the realm of aiding impoverished students here at University Park. There are many organizations dedicated to this cause that do not receive the support, recognition, or publicity they deserve. I hope to work with organizations like Lion’s Pantry and Project Cahir, along with University administrators, to both publicize and enhance existing resources while exploring new options.
- Organizational efficiency- Towards the end of the 11th Assembly, discussions emerged regarding how to improve UPUA as an organization. I believe wholeheartedly in these efforts and think that we as an organization can best serve students when we are working at maximum efficiency. If elected, I will make every effort to continue this discussion at every level of the organization.
- Enhancing legislative outreach– As it stands today, the UPUA makes a great effort to advocate for students at the local, state, and federal levels of government. After a year of learning the ropes of legislative advocacy, I believe it is extremely important to establish stronger, more consistent relationships with our local legislators and to take more tangible steps at advocating for causes important to the student body.
Other Involvement/Time Commitments
I am not currently involved in any other on-campus organizations, but I would like to become involved in a THON Committee and/or Smeal Student Council during the 2017-2018 academic year. Also, I am currently an intern at the District Office of U.S. Representative Glenn “G.T.” Thompson. That internship should be ending at the end of this semester.
