My name is Sophie Haiman and I am a freshman from Wayne, New Jersey. I am a double major in International Relations and Global and International Studies with a concentration in Human Rights. Additionally, I am an aspiring Paterno Fellow and am hoping to transition into Shreyer’s Honors College after this semester. I am currently a member of UPUA’s Freshman Council. As a part of UPUA, I sit on both Academic Affairs and Government Affairs. I also sit on the LMS committee to transition the university from Angel to Canvas. In addition to my involvement in UPUA, I am in Ohana, a THON organization, and the Human Rights Brigade of Global Brigades. Throughout my short time here I have had the amazing opportunity of helping to better our community and I hope to have the opportunity to continue to do so!
a.) One issue is the expense of textbooks. Each semester students are plagued with massive textbook expenses plus the loans which many already deal with. One way I propose we solve this problem is requiring teachers to provide online codes or links to books. This way the books can be significantly cheaper, cancelling out the prices of print.
b.) Many students are swamped with loans, yet they are clueless of the impacts they can have currently and in the future. Therefore, I propose we have a financial awareness week. We could reserve tables for a week at the HUB. At these tables students could sign up for appointments with financial advisors and have access to informational flyers. These tables can also provide information of other places to look for scholarships and loans.
c.) Another issue at the university are students’ academic rights. Many students, including myself, have very little knowledge about these rights and don’t know where to find this information. Therefore, we should come up with a central page on Lionpath where students can find out about these rights. Additionally, this would help advisors, eliminating the need to meet with students to inform them of these policies.
