Courtney Hummel is a sophomore from Northumberland, PA. She is majoring in Economics, Political Science, and Labor and Employment Relations. Courtney currently serves as the UPUA Executive Director of Governmental Affairs. Outside of UPUA, she is involved with the Economics Association as the Alumni Relations Coordinator and Phi Alpha Delta, Pre-Law Fraternity as the Fundraising Chair. Courtney spent this past summer in Washington, D.C. where she was an intern at No Labels, a non-profit organization focused on promoting problem solving and bipartisan solutions in government. Additionally, she was an intern for State Representative Lynda Schlegel Culver (108th District) for three summers while in high school. After graduation, Courtney plans to attend law school.
If elected to the 12th Assembly, Courtney plans to focus on increasing civic engagement among students, fostering relationships with elected officials, and improving communications between Penn State students and UPUA.
Increasing Civic Engagement: It’s no secret that college students consistently vote at lower rates than all other age groups. Courtney recognizes this lack of engagement and plans to help students find their voice to communicate their personal story with elected officials. She plans to help students understand the facets of the government and help ease the process in registering to vote. Additionally, Courtney is especially passionate about working with Pennsylvania legislators to increase higher education funding to make college more affordable.
Fostering Relationships with Elected Officials: Elected officials want to hear from their constituents, and students are no exception. Courtney wants to hold student forums with elected officials to increase communication and create an online resource center where students can find up to date political information on issues that directly impact them.
Improving Communications: Courtney intends to help create an environment on campus where students feel comfortable coming to their Student Government. She would like to have more events where students have the opportunity to approach members of UPUA and voice their concerns.
