Candidate Biography

If you’re reading this, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to you. Thank you not only for taking the time to peruse my biography, but more importantly, for considering the weighty decision of electing a representative for the University Park Undergraduate Association (UPUA). Your choice transcends mere representation; it’s about entrusting someone to echo your voice, advocate for your college, champion your academic pursuits, and embody your passion for our beloved Eberly College of Science.

The responsibility inherent in this role is immense, yet the prospect of serving my peers, classmates, and even those I’ve yet to meet fills me with profound joy. Allow me to offer a glimpse into who I am, my motivations, and why I believe I can be the advocate you seek and the ally you deserve.

My name is Andrew, and I am currently a junior enrolled in the Forensic Science program. My journey to the United States, where I proudly call home, hasn’t been lengthy, but it’s been marked by profound experiences. As asylees, my family and I sought refuge here, eager to embrace the opportunities this country affords. Prior to settling here, we traversed multiple countries, each stop enriching my understanding of humanity, culture, and diversity. Living in Europe for three years as a medical student exposed me to a tapestry of perspectives, underscoring the invaluable treasure that is diversity.

However, my time in Europe wasn’t without its challenges. Amidst the backdrop of a global pandemic, I assumed the role of a dean’s student assistant, shouldering responsibilities for fellow foreign students, coordinating travel arrangements, liaising with embassies, and supporting those affected by COVID-19. The loss of personal friends to the virus served as a poignant reminder of life’s fragility. Yet, these trials molded me into the resilient individual I am today.

Upon arriving in the U.S., my family and I faced daunting circumstances—no employment, no resources. Yet, through the kindness of strangers, we found solace. Mr. Ryan Service, Head of Admissions at Penn State York, epitomizes this kindness. His unwavering support and guidance enabled me to navigate the intricacies of applying to Penn State, a journey I undertook with hope and determination.

The outpouring of support I received fueled my desire to reciprocate. As a proud Penn State UP junior, NRHH Programming Director, and leader within various campus organizations and a member of even more organizations —including First-Generation Advocates and the ECoS Student Council—I am committed to serving my community. My aim is clear: to give back and extended a helping hand when needed, to amplify student voices, and to cultivate meaningful connections.

With a wealth of experience and a diverse skill set, I aspire to support my colleagues within the Eberly College of Science, nurturing their academic and professional endeavors while offering guidance in all facets of life. Together, let us embark on this journey of advocacy, solidarity, and mutual support. Thank you for considering me as your ally and representative—I stand ready to serve, uplift, and empower our community.
