Henry Wagner

Candidate Biography

Hello everyone, I am Henry Wagner, and I am running for an At-Large position! I am from Pittsburgh Pennsylvania and come from a large Penn State family. I am majoring in Computer Science, with an interest in adding a minor along the way. I have a lot of pride in our school and look forward to continuing some great work. I am interested in student government because I value hard work that makes tangible changes. I was both an Eagle Scout and the President of a Gender and Sexualities Alliance in high school, as well as an athlete and a cast member in musicals and plays. Being a part of a wide array of very different groups enables me to gain a unique perspective that makes me an effective advocate and representative of a complex student body.

In the 18th Assembly (this past year) I joined early in the fall semester as the First Year Representative and member of the First Year Council. I was one of only a handful of freshmen who were voting members of committees and the assembly, and I had the chance to get very involved early on. Being able to take such an involved and committed role so early has led me to be very knowledgeable on the process of legislation and how UPUA operates.

Previously I:
→Sat on Student Life and Justice and Equity Committees
→Personally headed several initiatives in both Committees
→Networked well across all branches of UPUA leading to effective collaborations
→Started foundation research and discussion on projects that could be continued in the 19th Assembly

I have a few big ideas for the next assembly. Externally, my goals are to increase collaboration with other orgs for UPUA’s biggest tabling event Mental Health and Wellness Week. Also, I’d like to continue the efforts to create a roundtable event involving important organizations spearheading movement for Sexual Violence Awareness and Prevention (SVAP), an initiative that I headed this last assembly. Internally, I would like to develop a review system for tabling events so that we can be sure that successive iterations on well-known projects continue to build improvements, and I hope to develop more effective cross-committee legislation. In the 18th Assembly, there were a few instances where two committees would work on very similar goals at the same time independently, and more communication could help bring compatible projects together to reach a more effective end.

I am confident that with your vote, I will be able to continue working hard to develop UPUA initiatives to be more effective, more efficient, and more meaningful to the individual student.
